The mysterious case of the exploding slow cooker

We arrived home last night to find a strange white thing on the floor.

It looked suspiciously like the handle for our slow-cooker cover.

That was because it was the handle for our slow-cooker cover.

And the slow-cooker cover itself was shattered glass with a great big hole in the middle about the size of the handle that now resided on our kitchen floor.

Clearly, something went ‘bang’ very loudly while we were out. There was an explosion of such proportions that the handle was flown off the slow cooker and onto the floor while the glass of the slow cooker shattered around it on the bench and in it onto the prepared dinner.

Needless to say really, but we changed our dinner plans rather abruptly. Lamb chops with thyme, potatoes and shattered glass wasn’t quite what we had in mind when we’d (or, I should say, my wife) had prepared it earlier that day.

And so I made macaroni cheese and we took comfort in that.

And so when I couldn’t sleep during the night I tried to figure out how it was that the lid could explode as it did. I have my theories and one of them was to do with the fact that the thyme we used for the dinner was, in fact, past its used-by date and had, perhaps, turned nuclear. But it’s just a theory.

I shall probably put this all down to one of life’s little mysteries…
